Print // Apparel // SG50 Design Tee Competition 2014 // Top 6 Finalists
Pertaining to a local tee design competition in 2014, to commemorate our homeland Singapore’s 50th birthday (SG50), we decided to input our very own version of the entry, with also some hopes to win the competition.
With some pre-defined limitations that only (a) One Red color tone was to be used, and (b) The SG50 logo must be present in the design, we quickly dive into our design brainstorming phase.
Our intended storyline was based along with the notion of summarising the historical significance of a great 50 years, from 1965 to 2015, into fundamental icons that can be easily understood by individuals from all walks of life.
Though our final decision came up to a list of 4 designs that took some time to painfully put together, we eventually put our faith in the primary design [The First One], where there was the use of the name of ‘Singapore‘ in the four primary language variants of the local community, namely Chinese, Malay, Tamil and English. In addition, there was also the inclusion of adorable yet relevant icons to depict ‘Singapore as Our Home‘, with the use of a Heart, a Home and an Island.
Eventually, despite being unable to get into the Top 5 finalists, which will allow the design to be printed for the eventual sale to commemorate National Day, we were still thankful that we got into the Top 6th position, through a public voting system.

The dumbest mistake is viewing design as something you do at the end of the process to ‘tidy up’ the mess, as opposed to understanding it’s a ‘day one’ issue and part of everything.
